SAN DIEGO _ The franchise cornerstone was on full display Wednesday, Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt launching one resounding blast, then another. On this night, he got the better of two potential building blocks for the San Diego Padres.
Goldschmidt twice took right-hander Luis Perdomo deep, out-homering Padres first baseman Wil Myers in a 3-2 victory for the D-backs.
Goldschmidt and Myers, in fact, combined to drive in all five of the runs scored.
In the top of the first, Goldschmidt drilled a solo shot off Perdomo.
In the bottom of the third, Myers hammered a curveball from Zack Greinke. The Padres took a 2-1 lead.
For Myers, it was his 27th homer of the season, extending a career high. It was his 17th at home this year, increasing a Petco Park record.
In the top of the sixth, fellow All-Star Goldschmidt blistered a two-run shot into the Padres bullpen, reclaiming the advantage for Arizona.
Perdomo otherwise avoided damage, finishing with seven innings of three-run ball. The rookie allowed five hits and no walks.
Observers to the proceedings included four touted position players, promoted earlier in the day. After a run to the Triple-A national championship game, catcher Austin Hedges, infielder Carlos Asuaje and outfielders Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe had received their long-awaited call-ups.
Following a cross-country flight, none of them started Wednesday's game, though, with the exception of Hedges, all played a small part. Asuaje (pinch-hit strikeout), Renfroe (pinch-hit intentional walk) and Margot (pinch-runner, defensive replacement in center field) all checked off their major league debuts.
The four youngsters are expected to be in Thursday's lineup against the San Francisco Giants.
