Known as a shrine that can ward off bad luck, Hirota Shrine in Aomori, Aomori Prefecture is showcasing goldfish-shaped nebuta lanterns for the second summer in a row. The lanterns function as a prayer, asking that the novel coronavirus be brought under control.
The lanterns are lit up from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and appear to float splendidly in the night sky.
Each goldfish lantern is about 45 centimeters in size and 140 of them are lined up in rows at the Otorii gate. Many people visit the shrine and take pictures of the alluring goldfish nebuta lanterns.
The chief priest of the shrine said, "Although the Aomori Nebuta Festival has been cancelled again this year, I hope people will spend the summer with a pure heart by watching the goldfish nebuta."
The event runs until Aug. 8.
