GoldenEye 007 mod adds bizarre crossover with Super Mario 64

A new mod for the classic James Bond game GoldenEye 007 includes an unlikely crossover with Nintendo’s classic platformer Super Mario 64.

Both games were originally released on the Nintendo 64 console, and remain two of the best-loved video games ever made.

“Modding” is when a game’s code is altered, usually on PC, by users, allowing them to add unofficial content to existing releases.

A modder who goes by StupidMarioBros1Fan created the mod, which turns Mario 64’s famous Peach’s Castle setting into a GoldenEye map.

Footage of people playing the mashup, entitled GoldenEye with Mario characters, can be seen on YouTube.

However, players need to use an emulator – a programme which allows gamers to run console game on their PC – to play the game.

GoldenEye, first released in 1997, is frequently listed among the best first-person shooters of all time, with particular praise being lavished on its multiplayer mode.

Super Mario 64 originally hit shelves in 1996, and sees players control Mario as he traverses a number of different environments, collecting stars.

The game was re-released on the Nintendo DS in 2004 (as Super Mario 64 DS), and was included in last year’s three-part re-release Super Mario 3D All Stars for the Nintendo Switch, alongside Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy.
