Golden Tate on Matthew Stafford: ‘The guy can flat-out play’

Former Lions wide receiver Golden Tate joined Bernie Smilovitz of Detroit Local 4 for an interview, and Tate had nothing but love for his former team and quarterback.

Tate is now with the New York Giants after signing as a free agent earlier this offseason. The Lions traded the nifty wideout to the Philadelphia Eagles midway through the 2018 campaign, his fifth year in Detroit.

He heaped praise on Matthew Stafford, the longtime Lions quarterback with whom Tate connected with for at least 90 catches four years in a row.

“The guy can flat-out play, he’s tough, and his attitude is amazing and he just wants to play ball,” Tate said. “For me I have nothing but praises for him. It’s almost unfair despite how great he is, he doesn’t have a ring to show for it.”

Looking relaxed, Tate admitted, “Detroit will always have a place in my heart and I’ll always root for Detroit”– except when he’s playing against them directly.

“I’m forever grateful to the (Lions) organization,” Tate said.

The full interview is worth a watch, if for no other reason than to fondly recall Tate’s contributions and overall winning record while he was on the team.
