Golden State adds Kevin McClain to Summer League squad

Even with the NBA Draft over, the Golden State Warriors are still adding talent for the offseason.

According to Michael Scotto of The Athletic, the Warriors have signed a Summer League deal with former Belmont guard Kevin McClain.

Starring alongside first-round pick Dylan Windler at Belmont (Ohio Valley Conference), McClain helped lead the Bruins to an NCAA Tournament appearance this past year. As an 11 seed, Belmont defeated Temple in one of the four play-in-games, and gave the six seed Maryland everything that they had but, unfortunately, fell just short.

Over the course of the Tournament, McClain averaged 24 points, five rebounds and two assists per game. During his senior season at Belmont, McClain averaged 16.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists; he was named to the First Team OVC for his efforts. Joining him were Windler and second overall pick Ja Morant.

McClain will likely be playing alongside Warriors draftees Jordan Poole, Eric Paschall, and Alen Smailagic, as well as fellow undrafted free agents Dedric Lawson and NBA veteran Jimmer Fredette. The Warriors will begin their 2019 Summer League with the California Classic on July 1, and they will also participate in the Las Vegas section from July 5 through July 10.

McClain might remind some Warriors’ fans of another undrafted Belmont star who followed a similar path. Ian Clark joined Golden State’s roster in the summer in 2013 and set the Summer League on fire, winning MVP. Clark has spent six seasons in the league since then, including a year on the Warriors’ 2017 title team. If Kevin McClain can recreate that kind of success, Golden State will have found yet another diamond in the rough.
