Amid the gold medal rush among Japanese athletes at the Tokyo Olympics, the "antenna shop" selling specialty products of Ehime and Kagawa prefectures in Minato Ward, Tokyo, is experiencing a rush on mandarin orange juice.
The shop has seen a sharp increase in sales and inquiries for Kin-medaru mikan jusu (Gold medal mandarin orange juice), made with unshu mikan grown in Ehime Prefecture.
The juice was developed by Golden, 8, an agricultural company in Yawatahama, Ehime Prefecture, about five years ago with the aim of making the "world's most delicious juice" in time for the Tokyo Games. Priced at 1,296 yen for a 720-milliliter bottle (tax included), Kin-medaru mikan jusu is 100% mandarin orange juice with a sugar content of more than 13 degrees.
The company is said to have pursued a good balance of sweetness and sourness in the drink, as well as a smooth sensation when swallowing.
Golden, 8 President Yasushi Yano, 51, said the juice is something "born in the golden mountains where mikan fruits shine in terraced fields that have good sun exposure."
The antenna shop, Kagawa Ehime Setouchi Shunsaikan, used to sell about 25 bottles of the juice a month at most, but it sold 35 bottles in three days following the Games' opening ceremony alone.
Shop manager Makoto Saito, 46, said he hopes the juice will be enjoyed at home when watching the Games, wishing for more success of Olympic athletes.
