ABASHIRI, Hokkaido -- A confectionery wholesaler in Abashiri, Hokkaido, has released snacks featuring characters from "Golden Kamuy," a popular TV anime series set in Meiji-era Hokkaido.
A set of 12 peanut crackers (600 yen plus tax), whose package design features Yoshitake Shiraishi, who appears in the anime as a "genius jail breaker," was released earlier this month, followed by a set of 20 cookies (600 yen plus tax), which feature a young Ainu heroine and others on the package. The wholesaler, Mizuno Shoten, is involved in planning and sales of the products.
The anime is an adaptation of the manga series of the same title created by mangaka Satoru Noda, who was raised in Kitahiroshima in the prefecture. Characters embark on adventures in Hokkaido in search of hidden gold, and the series is known for its detailed depictions of Ainu culture. The manga is being carried in the weekly Young Jump magazine, published by Shueisha Inc.
The confectionery products are available at the Abashiri Prison Museum shop in Abashiri, a Michi no Eki roadside rest area and other shops in the prefecture's Okhotsk region.
Hiroko Yoshida, president of Mizuno Shoten, said, "I hope Abashiri becomes a 'sacred place' [for the anime], attracting many visitors to the city."
