The meaning behind the stars and hearts on Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s hands at the Golden Globes has been revealed.

The comedians hosted the annual awards ceremony on Sunday (28 February) night, honouring the best films and TV programmes of the last year.

However, many viewers spotted that both Poehler and Fey had hearts and stars drawn on their hands throughout the event, leading them to question what they meant.

This was answered by Netflix, who revealed on Twitter that the symbols were a reference to Moxie, a new film directed Poehler which comes to Netflix on Wednesday (3 March).

“For anyone wondering why Amy Poehler & Tina Fey had hearts & stars drawn on their hands tonight, the answer is: Moxie!” Netflix tweeted.

“In Poehler’s new movie, the design is a battle cry — worn by anyone who is sick of the status quo and willing to stand up and fight for what they believe in.”

A high-school comedy-drama, Moxie follows Vivian (Hadley Robinson), a teenage girl who is inspired by her mother (Poehler) to call out outdated behaviour and discrimination at her school and start a revolution.

It stars Josephine Langford, Alycia Pascual-Peña, Lauren Tsai, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Ike Barinholtz, Marcia Gay Harden and Josie Totah.

Moxie arrives on Netflix on Wednesday 3 March.
