Mark Ruffalo delivered one of the most stirring Golden Globes speeches, calling for an end to America’s “cruel past”.
The actor picked up the Best Actor in a Limited Series for his dual role as twins in HBO’s I Know This Much Is True, and used the chance to spread a message of hope to viewers.
“Meaning is our common humanity,” the Marvel star said from his home, surrounded by his family.
“What connects us is greater than what keeps us apart, and the more we include each other, and see each other, and hear each other, the faster we’ll heal our broken hearts and minds.”
He continued: “We have a dying mother, just like the mother in our story, she’s Mother Earth. We must come to balance with her, and honour her, and she’ll heal too. So let’s be courageous together, guys. Let’s turn the page on the cruel past of this nation.”

Without name-checking Donald Trump, he appeared to reference the end of his presidency by stating: “The good news is inclusion and justice and care for Mother Earth is breaking out everywhere. The godly light of decency is breaking through the hideous dark storm we’ve been living through. We are all in this together. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for, so let’s do this now. I love you.’
Elsewhere, many stars, including hosts Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, as well as Sterling K Brown (This Is Us) and Schitt’s Creek’s Dan Levy, addressed the lack of diversity among the ceremony’s voters during the ceremony.
Many high-profile figures spoke out against the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the voting organisation that decides the ceremony’s winners and nominees, doesn’t have a single Black member.
