Golden Globes: Daniel Kaluuya wins Best Actor, suffers Zoom fault familiar to us all

Photograph: NBC

Daniel Kaluuya won a Golden Globe for Best Actor, and then did what we’ve all done over the past year – forgot to unmute himself on Zoom.

Kaluuya was announced as the winner in the category for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his role as American activist Fred Hampton in Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah.

However, after Laura Dern announced his name, it soon became clear there was a fault with his Zoom connection.

Viewers could only hear silence as Kaluuya gave his winners speech with Dern awkwardly standing in the studio, unsure what to do.

The broadcast then cutaway from Kaluuya – but the actor could suddenly be heard again, exclaiming: “You’re doing me dirty!”

Thankfully, Kaluuya then managed to deliver his speech, in which he praised Hampton as well as his co-stars Lakeith Stanfield and Dominique Fishback.

Judas and the Black Messiah follows FBI informant William O’Neal (Stanfield) who infiltrated the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party to gather intelligence on Hampton.
