Netflix has emerged from the 2021 Golden Globes nominations announcement as the clear leader, scoring 22 nominations on the film side and 20 on the TV side.

The nominations were announced on Wednesday during a virtual event hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P Henson.

Many had predicted a successful day for Netflix, which has carried many of the major releases of 2020, such as Mank, The Crown, and The Queen’s Gambit. Those predictions have certainly come true. Mank, in fact, leads the Golden Globes race with a total of six nominations, including one in the Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama category for Gary Oldman, and one for Amanda Seyfried, for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture.

Netflix led last year’s Golden Globes nominations too, with a total of 34.

This year, Netflix supplied two out of five nominees in the Best Picture – Drama category: David Fincher’s Mank and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7.

Netflix had more competition in the Best Picture – Musical/Comedy category. Its December 2020 release The Prom is up against Amazon Prime Video’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (whose stars Maria Bakalova and Sacha Baron Cohen also scored individual nominations), Disney+'s Hamilton, Neon and Hulu’s Palm Springs, and the Sia-directed Music, distributed by Vertical Entertainment.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, also a Netflix release, earned Chadwick Boseman a posthumous nomination for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. Viola Davis is up for Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama for her performance in the film.

This year’s nominations also mark the first time more than one woman has been nominated for Best Director. Regina King is up for One Night in Miami, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman.

In TV, Netflix’s The Crown, Ozark, and Ratched are all up for Best Drama Series. Emily in Paris, another Netflix original, is nominated for Best Musical/Comedy Series alongside Emmys darling Schitt’s Creek.

Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit and Unorthodox are both up for Best Television Motion Picture, next to Normal People (distributed by Hulu in the US and the BBC in the UK), Small Axe (Amazon), and The Undoing (HBO).

Actor Anya Taylor-Joy has scored nominations both for her role in the 2020 film Emma and The Queen’s Gambit.
