Golden Globes 2019: Bohemian Rhapsody wins Best Film in 'unexpected' victory

The biggest Golden Globes shock was reserved for the evening’s final awards.

A sea of shock descended upon the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles as Nicole kidman presented the trophy for Best Film – Drama to Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Freddie Mercury biopic saw off fierce competition from Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born, which was heavily expected to become the ceremony’s biggest winner. Cooper's musical drama won just one award for its original song, “Shallow” with lady Gaga losing out to The Wife star Glenn Close for Best Actress in a Drama.

Rami Malek had earlier won Best Actor for his portrayal of the Queen frontman. The film’s producer Graham King accepted the trophy alongside guitarist Brian May, delivering a speech that failed to mention either of the film’s directors, Bryan Singer and Dexter Fletcher.

He described the film's win as "unexpected"

This year’s ceremony was presented by Killing Eve star Sandra Oh and Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg. You can find a compilation of their best jokes here. One such quip led to a whitewashing apology from Emma Stone.

Guest presenters throughout the ceremony included Chadwick Boseman, Jessica Chastain, Jamie Lee Curtis and Harrison Ford, while US television legend Carol Burnett became the first recipient of a brand new special achievement award dedicated to the small screen.

Other winners included the Peter Farrelly comedy drama Green Book and actors Glenn Close and Olivia Colman who won for The Wife and The Favourite, respectively.
