Gold Star for pupils at Torphichen Primary

Staff and pupils at a West Lothian primary school have been awarded a gold star.

Torphichen Primary School and Nursery Class has been rated as good in every category by inspectors.

An inspection team from Education Scotland and the Care Inspectorate visited the school recently to assess the work taking place in the school. The joint team assessed the school and nursery class in 12 key quality indicators, rating them as good in every area.

They identified a number of key strengths, including effective leadership and a strong culture of collaboration and consultation, very positive relationships and supportive interactions by staff and children who are friendly, polite and proud of their school.

The also highlighted a nurturing climate for learning across the whole school and singled out the effective practice in literacy and numeracy which is leading to improved attainment and the strong commitment from parents and families to widen learning experiences for children.

Areas for improvement were also identified such as ensuring staff are planning for clear progression pathways across all curriculum areas in the nursery class, and senior leaders should proceed as planned to put in place clear strategies and interventions across the school and nursery class.

Torphichen Primary School and Nursery Class head teacher Marnie Ferguson said: “We are delighted that inspectors at both Education Scotland and the Care Inspectorate have recognised the good work taking place throughout Torphichen.

“Thanks to all the staff, parents and pupils who were part of the inspection process and helped demonstrate the positive ethos we have at Torphichen.

“We will use this report to build on the strengths identified and work on the areas for improvement to ensure we provide our children and young people the best possible start in education.”

Executive councillor for education David Dodds added: “Congratulations to everyone at Torphichen Primary and Nursery Class on achieving good in every indicator from their recent inspection.

“I’m especially pleased to see their good work in key areas of literacy and numeracy recognised by inspectors, and the school is well-placed to continue to improve further.”
