NAKHON SAWAN: A man who snatched two 10-baht gold necklaces from a gold shop was caught by members of a lion-dance troupe as he ran away.

The owner of Yak Mee Tang gold shop said that about 4.30pm a skinny middle-aged man, wearing a grey jacket and orange pants, walked into the shop and asked to see two 10-baht gold necklaces.

The shop attendant became distracted and the man fled from the shop with the necklaces, heading in the direction of Sawan Withi road, which had been closed for a parade to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

He ran into an elderly woman and fell to the ground. As he got up and tried to run away he was blocked by the woman's son who called for help. The gold snatcher was then caught by members of a lion-dance troupe who were preparing for a performance.

The man was identified as Preecha Inna, 34.

Mr Preecha said he stole the gold because, as a farmer, he and his family had been hard hit by the continuing drought.
