Gold medalist Eilish McColgan leads Team Scotland from Commonwealth Games as flagbearer

Gold and silver medalist Eilish McColgan has ended a wonderful fortnight for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games as one of the first flagbearers at tonight's closing ceremony.

The lioness walked from the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham donned in a tartan kilt with a saltire proudly flown above her shoulders as the 31-year-old took home the 10,000m in gold and 5000m in silver. Her victory has been a Games record having surpassed the achievement of her mother Liz in 1986 and 1990.

Teammate Laura Muir has also added to the national triumph as she bagged gold in the 1500m to the bronze she won in the 800m. This year's Games have been the most memorable for the Scotland Team outside of Glasgow in 2014 - with a haul of 49 medals including 12 gold, 11 silver and 26 bronze.

While Scotland lit up the race track, national champions triumphed in the boxing ring having won three gold medals. Light-welterweight Reese Lynch, middleweight Sam Hickey and light-heavyweight Sean Lazzerini all took the top prize home.

Elsewhere, Neah Evans took home silver in the women’s road race.

Commenting on the victory, Eilish said on Sunday: "Team Scotland absolutely smashing these Commonwealth Games. Massive congratulations to all the medal winners – you’ve done us all proud.”

She added: “I’m confident the performance of the athletes this year will inspire our athletes of the future.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was among the Scots to congratulate the national team, Tweeting: "@Team_Scotland - absolutely outstanding."

British flagbearers for the 22nd Games included England's Jake Jarman, Jersey's Daniel Lee, Northern Ireland's Dylan Eagleson.

Team Scotland was made up of 260 competitors from across the country this year, with the team comprising of 126 men and 134 women.
