NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: A key suspect in a gold buying scam that investors claim cost them about 100 million baht has turned herself in to police to face fraud charges.

Nitnipa "Gif" Choppote, 28, surrendered to police at Muang district on Sunday night after the provincial court on Friday approved a warrant for her arrest for allegedly swindling about 50 people of their money.

Accompanied by relatives, the suspect reported to Pol Lt Col Niti Boonchan, deputy chief of Muang police station.

Police said Ms Nitnipa refused to make a statement during questioning and they would on Monday ask the court to approve her further detention and oppose any bail request.

The case was brought to the attention of police on Aug 17.

Complainants alleged they were lured by Ms Nitnipa into buying gold at cheap prices from a gang she belonged to, leading to losses about 100 million baht. Police have yet to determine the actual size of the financial damage.

The accused woman allegedly pretended to be a partner of the Gold Traders Association in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
