I’m going to wrap this blog up now, because it’s been almost four hours since I started and I need a drink, or a cry. Thanks for your emails – it’s been fun. Good night!
Well done Panama. That was a deserved victory, although it should never have gone to penalties. They should have won about 11-1 at the end of 120 minutes, but some good goalkeeping from Brad Guzan and some lamentable finishing from the Panamanians kept it level. USA, basically, were rubbish.
Full time: USA 1-1 Panama (Panama win 3-2 on penalties)
Panama finish third in the Gold Cup!
USA 2-3 Panama: Beasley misses!
Saved by Mejia! Panama win!
USA 2-3 Panama: Cummings scores!
Ooh, just about. Guzan got a hand to it, but couldn’t stop it.
USA 2-2 Panama: Bradley misses!
What a save by Mejia! At full stretch! Outstanding.
USA 2-2 Panama: Cooper misses!
Saved by Guzan! He guessed the right way, but that was a poor penalty. Underhit.
USA 2-2 Panama: Johnson misses!
Over the top!
USA 2-2 Panama: Arroyo scores!
With a stutter, but good spot kick.
USA 2-1 Panama: Dempsey scores!
With a dink. Just.
USA 1-1 Panama: Torres scores!
Guzan went the wrong way.
USA 1-0 Panama: Johannsson scores!
Just rolls it in.
Updated
It feels like we’ve been playing for whole months. USA to take first, I think.
There’s quite a lot of standing around. Come on, chop chop! We’ve got Saturday nights to get on with.
I just want this to be over. Who’s with me!!!!
So, penalties. Fun. I guess?
Full time, extra time: USA 1-1 Panama
See 101 min.
120 min + 1: Dempsey penalised for pushing. That’s it, I think.
120 min: And Bradley’s ball in is too long. But Corona does well, and forces another corner! Seconds to go!
Updated
119 min: Cummings blocks Yedlin’s cross. Corner USA!
118 min: USA are just launching it forward to no one in particular. They have been awful in extra time.
117 min: Well, that was absurd: one of the Panama midfielders was standing about four yards away from that free kick when it was taken, and Bradley smashed it at him, and no free kick!
116 min: Torres is booked. USA free kick about 28 yards from goal.
114 min: Someone score. Please. I beg you.
113 min: This is jokes: USA keep giving the ball to Panama, who proceed to dance through the USA defence, and then just seem incapable of putting it in Guzan’s net. Panama’s finishing is crap!
112 min: USA clear. A wasted set piece. But the pass to Beasley is dreadful, and it’s a Panama throw.
111 min: Godoy fouls Chandler. Bradley’s ball in is cleared, and Panama counter-attack: Nurse gets clear again, and again that’s a big chance! Guzan saves. Corner.
110 min: Nurse gets in front of Brooks, but can’t get a clear contact, and it’s a goal kick.
109 min: Roberto Nurse, clean through! Misses! Yedlin did well to come back and put him off, but he should have scored.
107 min: Corona makes a good block on Cooper, who took too long. He should have shot sooner.
106 min: No one is going to score here. I can feel it in my old bones. Prove me wrong, boys!
Half time, extra time: USA 1-1 Panama
Ream is back on, but he’s limping.
105 min: Ream has gone off clutching his quad. USA have had one shot on goal. One! Panama have had 10, 21 in total, and they’re still level. I am seriously perplexed. Panama should, and I say this with complete non-partisanship, be about 7-1 in the lead.
103 min: Ream is down. He got clonked by Guzan, who is never the most graceful of movers, I think it’s fair to say.
101 min: Corona looks for Yedlin, but the wide man’s cross is claimed by Mejia. This is going to penalties. I’ve never been more confident of anything in my life.
99 min: Panama love a ruckus, don’t they? Maybe they go loopy in the heat. Guzan flaps at a Davis cross, but USA win the free kick.
97 min: Beasley goes down on the edge of the box, but Godoy won it cleanly. No foul. Now Chandler and Davis are getting cranky, and suddenly there’s a fracas involving about 12 players. Jeez Louise. This is idiotic.
Updated
96 min: Panama try to counter-attack, but they look absolutely spent.
Here’s Scott Bassett:
DaMarcus is the answer that Klinsi has come up with? Don’t get me wrong, I love DMB, but this is how we move into the future? Is it time to put Jurgen out of his misery?
I think it’s more of an opportunity for the fans to thank Beasley for his long service. But who can say for sure?
Updated
94 min: Torres dispossesses Bradley, and Panama counter, but Pinzon is eased off it by Brooks. Good defending.
92 min: Arroyo’s ball in nearly falls for Quintero, but Guzan is out quickly.
Extra time is under way
91 min: DaMarcus Beasley replaces Omar Gonzalez. And Darwin Pinzon replaces the substitute Alfredo Stephens.
Caitlin Murray speaks for all of us:
Wait, this is going to extra time? Good god.
— Caitlin Murray (@caitlinmurr) July 25, 2015
I honestly cannot believe Panama. They’ve created about six clear chances in this match. How are they still level?
Full-time: USA 1-1 Panama
Extra time. For fuck’s sake.
90 min + 1: Arroyo! That was the chance, but wide!
89 min: We’re having 30 more minutes of this, aren’t we?
88 min: Bradley’s ball in is a farce. Catching practice for Mejia.
87 min: Tony Meola reckons an MLS team should try to nab Torres from Millionarios. He’s been excellent today again, although he should have scored earlier. Cooper clips Corona. Yellow card, and a decent area for USA to attack.
Sub for Panama: Abdiel Arroyo for Rolando Blackburn.
86 min: And that’s another chance for Blackburn! Wide! A mirror image of the earlier Torres effort. Should have hit the target.
84 min: Erick Davis! His crossing has been so good all day, but he failed to provide a certain goal there. That was so sloppy: three Panamanian players were free, in the area, and he chose to cross high rather than just slide it on the deck, and it was over everyone. A huge waste: Panama should be about four goals up!
82 min: This game has heated up! Eight minutes left – who’s going to get the winner?
81 min: USA make a mess of it, and suddenly Panama are away. Quintero leads the counter, but Corona does well to recover. And that’s a brilliant save from Brad Guzan! Blackburn’s header from Davis’s cross, and Guzan gets down so well to save. Outstanding!
80 min: Cummings heads clear, and it’s a USA corner. Their first of the game, if you can believe it.
78 min: Foul by Bradley on Cooper – Bradley Cooper! – and it’s a dangerous free kick for Panama, about 25 yards from goal. Davis with it … straight at Guzan.
77 min: I really don’t mind who wins this match, but please don’t let it go to extra time. Have a heart, people!
Here’s Michael Bertin:
Pulling for your country to lose because you think some greater good will come out of it seems like more of an England thing to do. Perhaps Chad Noyes could become a Three Lions supporter if he doesn’t want the US to win.
75 min: Hernan Dario Gomez, the Panama coach, is in an almighty funk. That Stevens chance … he was absolutely all alone in front, but why didn’t he pass? Yedlin and Dempsey, the two subs, did well for the USA goal, though.
72 min: How are USA level here? Well, because Panama can’t finish, and because Dempsey is a boss. Now Dempsey outjumps Mejia, and it’s just wide!
71 min: A long ball over the top, and Yedlin got in behind. He went wide, Mejia came out, but Yedlin showed great composure to find Dempsey, and he slotted home from 12 yards with the keeper nowhere. From nowhere, USA are level.
GOAL! USA 1-1 Panama (Dempsey 70)
And then USA equalize. I knew it!
70 min: What a chance for Alfredo Stevens! Tim Ream got sucked in, and Alfredo was all alone, streaking in front of goal, but he shot when he should have passed. Great opportunity!
69 min: Panama are well on top here, but they can’t continue to be so wasteful. They should be two goals clear. Nice interchange between Johnson and Dempsey, but Panama defend solidly.
67 min: Panama have had 12 shots. USA? Two. And that’s another free chance for Panama! Stevens’ cross was deflected, but Nurse got up high, and just couldn’t direct his header. USA lucky again!
65 min: That was so close for Panama! And it should have been two. Stevens, who replaced Camargo, crossed high, Nurse headed back, and Torres, up from the back, drilled it low and hard, but just wide of the post. Guzan didn’t move.
Updated
63 min: USA need a spark. They haven’t got going in this second half.
Here’s Chad Noyes:
I’m sure I’m not the only American hoping we lose this game. We need the love-in with Klinsmann to come to an end.
62 min: Godoy does well to get away from Bradley, but USA fall back quickly into their defensive shape. Johannsson fouls Cooper, and Panama are happy.
60 min: USA can’t get the ball, and they don’t want to be chasing around after it in this heat. Double substitution for USA: Dempsey and Yedlin in, Wondolowski and Zusi out.
I feel a bit sorry for Wondolowski: he always seems to be the one who gets yanked. He’s been no worse than Johannsson in this game. And Zusi’s unlucky, too: he’s played well today.
57 min: Panama have scored first in every game in this tournament: and they haven’t won any of them.
Dempsey’s coming on. Jürgen’s making changes!
56 min: An excellent finish from Nurse, who accepted Blackburn’s pass, turned inside Brooks, whose attempt at a tackle was pretty weary, and his shot past Guzan was accurate and low. Great goal, and well deserved.
GOAL! USA 0-1 Panama (Nurse 55)
Panama take a deserved lead!
55 min: Corner for Panama. And that’s a great chance … and a great clearance from Fabian Johnson! Off the line! Blackburn got up so well to head Cooper’s corner on frame, but Johnson was alert to hack clear. Guzan wasn’t saving that!
53 min: It’s filthy hot in Phillie: 110F pitchside, so maybe that’s why this game hasn’t caught fire.
52 min: Chandler’s ball in, and Wondolowski gets between Torres and Cummings, but his header is just wide. A difficult chance, but better from USA.
51 min: Ack, Johannsson was nearly in there, but a poor first touch let him down. Good pass from Bradley, though.
49 min: Bradley’s ball in is headed clear by Godoy. Actually, I don’t think Machado was carded just then. I don’t know how he managed to survive that.
48 min: Johansson is tripped by Machado, right by the touchline, and that’s yellow. That was crude. Good chance for USA here.
47 min: Corona gives it away, and Quintero has a shot from distance, but it’s high.
Second half begins
46 min: John Strong on Fox just confirmed that there will be extra time and penalties if this ends all square at 90. Please, please, please don’t let that happen.
We’re back out. What’s going to happen in this second half? Maybe someone will score a goal!
Half-time: USA 0-0 Panama
Reasonably boring, but Panama look quite good. USA haven’t offered much. See you in 15!
45 min + 3: Nice play from Quintero to find Machado, and Johnson prevents the corner. The long throw is headed clear, but Davis puts in a booming cross from the left, and Nurse’s flick is just wide! Another chance!
Updated
45 min + 1: Panama are a decent side, aren’t they? Organised, competent, skilful – and they’ve got a bit of needle. They’ve been the better side in this first half. Four minutes of stoppage time! Oh, the humanity.
44 min: Gonzales trips Nurse, and it’s a Panama free kick. No card, so cue much moaning and general annoyance. Cooper with the set piece, Torres knocks it back, and that’s a chance for Camargo! Blocked, and cleared away. Panama look dangerous from set plays.
41 min: Ooh, that was a chance! Camargo’s ball in from the right, and Nurse got free of Chandler and Brooks, but his left-foot shot is hapless, and it’s well wide. Big opportunity there.
40 min: Davis’s ball in is well claimed by Guzan. Two good pieces of goalkeeping.
39 min: Heavy touch by Blackburn in the box, and Guzan does well to come out and claim. Panama have been slightly more threatening, but haven’t really created a clear opening.
38 min: Off the line by Tim Ream! Armando Cooper did so well to dribble into the box, and went round Gonzalez much too easily, but he was off balance as he shot left footed past Guzan, couldn’t find much power in his effort, and Ream did well to come back and clear.
Updated
36 min: The USA fans wanted a card there, but I think Cooper won the ball from Zusi. It’s been slow, has this first half. It’s hot in Philly, I guess, and both sides look fatigued. Brooks heads clear from Machado’s cross, and Camargo’s shot dribbles through to Guzan.
33 min: There’s been a dearth of clear chances. Armando Cooper lines one up from distance, but it’s well wide.
31 min: Johansson runs away from Cooper as USA break, but his pass for Wondolowski was underhit, sadly: otherwise Wondolowski was in.
29 min: We’re back on. Hard tackle by Davis on Zusi, but no card. Now we do have one: Johnson was late on Godoy.
Formal hydration break
Aka drinks.
26 min: Armando Cooper is down. Oscar Moncada, the Honduran ref, has a drink. Not too much urgency to get things going again.
24 min: Davis’s ball is rubbish, and then Quintero’s attempt is even rubbisher. USA break, and Zusi leads the charge, but his ball in for Bradley is well claimed by Mejia. Must be his new boots.
23 min: Aron Johannsson briefly looks like Munch’s Scream, after he’s whistled for a push. Disbelief! Then Panama win a free-kick, and Davis’s ball in is headed behind by Wondolowski. Corner.
20 min: USA just starting to find their rhythm, after an opening 10 minutes where it looked as though they just couldn’t be arsed. But there’s a stoppage, as Luis Mejia decides to change his boots. Groan.
19 min: Zusi’s scoop over the top is just too long for Johnson, after good work from Bradley. More good stuff from the Sporting KC man. And he’s got great hair!
17 min: Ooh: almost a fine pass from Zusi to Wondolowski, who would have been clear, but the San Jose man just couldn’t collect. Zusi has started well: he’s been involved in most of USA’s best play.
15 min: Quintero moves smoothly into the box, but he can’t pick out a teammate. Now USA counter-attack, and Zusi’s cross-shot finds Johnson, but his shot is scuffed, and that’s no problem for Mejia. Better from USA.
12 min: Dangerous ball in from Davis, but Blackburn can’t connect. USA, population 319 million, can’t get the ball off Panama, population 3.9 million.
Updated
11 min: Guzan is a bag of nerves, and he just larrups one straight into touch. Come on Jürgen, let’s try someone else in goal: Guzan’s had his go, and he’s not up to it. Bring back Tony Meola! (He was 25th in our top 25 list – have a look here.)
Updated
8 min: Panama are pushing USA back here. Machado gives Ream a hard time down the right side, and another cross is slung in, but Blackburn’s pea-roller is wide.
6 min: USA can’t clear the corner, and it falls to Godoy, or was it Cooper?, but his shot is weak. Nervy start by the USA defence.
Updated
5 min: Brooks gives it away in a bad position, but Blackburn and Nurse can’t combine, and the chance is lost. But that’s a nice pass from Quintero for Davis, the left back, and though Chandler covers, Guzan blams it behind and concedes a cheap corner. That was dumb!
3 min: Fabian Johnson goes down the left, but Torres clears. He’s been brilliant this tournament.
And we're off!
1 min: Panama have it. Then they give it away. Zusi and Chandler do well down the right, but Panama hack clear.
The players are out. Panama in red, USA in all white. Brad Guzan is in all green, but maybe he should be wearing red – out of embarrassment!!! You know, after Wednesday. Because he was rubbish.
DaMarcus Beasley tells Julie Stewart-Binks: “Hopefully we can win the third place medal.” And then guffaws heartily. Ha! He knows the score.
PPL Park is not full. Tony Meola on TV can understand why. “These were the kind of games no one wants to play in.” He’s right!

I think that call on Torres for the penalty was fair enough, actually. It definitely touched his hand, whether intentional or not. And didn’t Guardado do well to convert it, after 10 minutes of nonsense.
That Panama-Mexico semi-final was absolutely crazy, though: have a look at some of the highlights, some of the, let’s say, dubious referieeng decisions, and some bad behaviour from the players and fans.
And this is excellent, too: Michael Lewis on when USA won the first ever Gold Cup, back in 1991. Look at Dominic Kinnear’s hair!
If Man Utd versus Barcelona is more your thing, join my estimable colleague Bryan Graham for live coverage – kick off is 4pm ET also:
Panama are without Blas Perez, and they’re also missing Luis Tejada, who was sent off against Mexico on Wednesday, and then had an almighty tantrum before he left the field. Have a look at the video:
It was definitely an ugly challenge, but it wasn’t an elbow. Should he have gone?
US Soccer has a bad habit of only publishing the lineups of USA, as if they’re playing this match in isolation. Anyway! USA make six changes from the side that lost to Jamaica: Chandler, Ream, Gonzalez, Zusi, Corona and Wondolowski come in. And here’s what that means:
#USAvPAN: Brad Guzan and Michael Bradley are the only two #USMNT players to start all six games of #GoldCup2015.
— U.S. Soccer (@ussoccer) July 25, 2015
Today's lineups
They’re in:
USA: Guzan, Chandler, Ream, Brooks, Gonzalez, Johnson, Zusi, Bradley, Corona, Johannsson, Wondolowski.
Panama: Mejia, Machado, Cummings, Torres, Davis, Cooper, Camargo, Godoy, Quintero, Blackburn, Nurse.

Hello and welcome
Hi! USA play Panama today in Philly today – and, if we’re being, honest, no one wants to be here. A third place playoff game is akin to the wedding of an irritating older cousin: something you’re forced to endure rather than enjoy, to attend out of obligation rather than desire. If I were the USA or Panama, I’d be pissed: I’d either want to be in Sunday’s final, or just leave on my holidays, flush with feelings of disappointment, in USA’s case, and disgust, in Panama’s.
But such is life, and play this game we must, so we’ll be liveblogging with professionalism and gusto, as if it this game actually meant something. Kick off’s at 4pm: join us!
Tim will be here shortly. In the meantime, have a look at why Landon Donovan tops the list of our 25 greatest USMNT players of all time:
It was his career, not someone else’s.
In many ways, that’s the legacy of the greatest American soccer player of all time. Maybe he could have done more with his talent. Maybe he got the most out of it. Judge away.
He just wanted to be happy.
The end result is pretty impressive. On the club level, he won six MLS Cups, two with the San Jose Earthquakes and four with the Galaxy. He retired after the 2015 season as the league’s all-time leading goal scorer with 144 goals.
