Mexico is far and away the best team in Concacaf right now. Tata Martino is undefeated in his tenure, with seven wins in seven games. Several of his veterans opted out of attending the Gold Cup, and rising star Chucky Lozano was held out due to injury. The fact that Mexico has looked so good is a tribute to their depth. Uriel Antuna was only added to the roster after an injury opened up a slot, but he’s been an absolute revelation, scoring a hat trick in his first game and another against Martinique.
While Mexico’s match against Martinique wasn’t completely convincing, it wasn’t a complete lineup of starters. A worldie from Kevin Parsemain also kept the scoreline closer than anticipated. Regardless, Mexico fans and media expect to demolish opponents like that, with or without their starters.
Costa Rica, on the other hand, has been unconvincing in their recent Gold Cup matches. After a disappointing World Cup, it was time for Los Ticos to retool. Coach Gustavo Matosas was hired in October and is still in the rebuilding process, but has seen good performances from young players like Allan Cruz and Bryan Oviedo. Joel Campbell and captain Bryan Ruiz continue to be potential spark plugs, but lineup tinkering has prevented Costa Rica from having consistent performances. The hope is that Matosas has a better idea of his starters after experimentation against a weaker group, but their loss to Haiti wasn’t a good sign. We’ll see if they can hang with Mexico tonight.
