Canada has not historically been on the same elite level as Mexico, but change is afoot in the Great White North. With the likes of Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich and Cyle Larin of Besiktas manning the attack, Canada finally has a shot to take down their North American neighbors.
For their part, Mexico hasn’t lost to Canada since the 2000 Gold Cup. This year’s squad was expected to be more vulnerable given the absence of star players Chucky Lozano and Hector Herrera. However, if a 7-0 rout of Cuba in the first match was any indication, that won’t be the case. 21-year-old Uriel Antuna bagged a hat-trick for El Tri, while Wolves’ Raul Jimenez added two goals. The future is very bright for Tata Martino’s squad and they have the pieces to take the Gold Cup trophy back from the United States.
