Tata Martino has this Mexican machine running on all cylinders six matches into his tenure. With a perfect record and an exciting attack scoring loads of goals, this Gold Cup appears to be theirs for the taking. After destroying Cuba 7-0 in the opener, they dispatched Canada, 3-1, to clinch a spot in the knockout rounds. With their place secured, perhaps Martino will opt to get a look at some other players on his roster in what should be nothing more than a formality for the Concacaf powerhouse.
Martinique should be proud of themselves no matter how this one goes. Mathematically they are still alive for the next stage, but it would take something truly amazing for that to occur. A 3-0 win over Cuba has given them a chance, however small it may be. First, they must beat Mexico, a team that seems to be an unstoppable juggernaut at the moment. Then they must hope that Cuba, a team that’s 0-2 so far with 10 goals conceded and none scored, beats Canada. Needless to say, this is likely the end of the road for them, but they can go home with their heads held high and a win to their name.
