We’re one result away from learning who will participate in the 2019 Gold Cup final. The United States and Jamaica meet once again to decide who’ll make up one half of the final in Chicago on Sunday night. Having met just a few weeks ago in a friendly, these two familiar foes now battle it out with the stakes a lot higher.

To the surprise of many, the USA struggled mightily against Curacao in the quarterfinals, escaping with a 1-0 win. While Gregg Berhalter’s side has yet to concede a single goal in the tournament, they’ve still been less than convincing and inspire very little confidence heading into much tougher matches. It’s true that Jamaica defeated them in a pre-Gold Cup friendly a few weeks ago. However, it must be pointed out that it was a completely different looking squad that put up such a feeble effort in that match. Nevertheless, Jamaica surely has the momentum after that 1-0 win.
Jamaica is competing in their third straight Gold Cup semifinal after beating Panama, 1-0, on a late penalty. They’ll be hoping history repeats itself as these two teams met in 2015 at the same stage when the Reggae Boyz knocked out the USA. Revenge was served two years later by the United States when they met in the final, but Jamaica’s track record in the semifinals is very good.
The history between these two is palpable. That should make for a very entertaining match with neither team really being considered the favorite. When anything can happen, that usually makes for the best soccer.
