So far, Haiti has been one of the biggest surprises of this Gold Cup. Going a perfect 3-0 in the group stage, including a shocking final round win over Costa Rica to clinch the group, Haiti has their fans believing in something special. Historically, Haiti has fluctuated between group fodder and a thorn in the side for most of the big teams. However, with their surprise win over Costa Rica at Red Bull Arena, they made a statement of intent. No longer are they to be overlooked in this setting.
There’s no doubt that Canada is an up and coming side with huge potential. They boast several exciting and young players, none more than Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies. While Davies is the most high profile, it’s been striker Jonathan David to take this tournament by storm. The 19-year-old, who plays his club soccer with Belgian side Gent, leads the Gold Cup with five goals in three matches. Canada finished second alongside Mexico in a weak group. A meeting with an in-form team in the quarterfinals should be a better judgment of their current standing within the region.
