Since he was seven days old this duck has been making waves at Rainbow Bay on the Gold Coast.

In fact, Duck has even managed to catch a few waves with champion surfer Stephanie Gilmore.

"It does like to surf and it'll steal anyone's board, even a world champion's," said Duck's owner Tom Thomson.

"It's like a duck to water — it just did it."

Duck gives people 'simple joy'

Since 16-year-old Tom and his mother Kate Miller adopted Duck last March, the bird's surfing antics have made him a local celebrity.

"We put sunscreen on to go the beach and he can actually smell the sunscreen," Tom said.

After taking regular beach trips since he was just a duckling, Duck has become confident in the water.

"When he's had enough he'll catch a wave in and he does it independently," Ms Miller said.

She said they enjoyed watching people's reactions to the surfing bird, with many either "amazed or intrigued".

"I just like that it gives joy to people — simple joy."

But Duck is no easy pet

While others see Duck as "something unusual", Ms Miller said he was like any other pet and he came to training.

"Ours is house and toilet trained and that's a huge amount of work," she said.

"He was hand raised from six hours old.

"That's the trick — you've got to put in hours of work for the first two or three months all day, everyday to get it to the level you want."

Ms Miller, who has owned four different ducks over 35 years, said she was a very reliable pet owner.

"People are responsible with their dogs, we need to be responsible with Duck," she said.

"Duck always gets carried in a basket, he's never left free to run around.

But for all the hard work and attention, Tom said Duck has been just another pet.

"It's just a duck that goes to beach — it's nothing too fancy."
