Woman charged with murder after Gold Coast man shot dead

A crime scene has been set up at the house on Waverley Street in Southport.

Police have charged Gold Coast woman Paanice Lawrence with murder after her partner was shot dead at a Southport house overnight.

Ms Lawrence, also known as Paania, was also charged with unlawfully possessing a category H weapon.

She is expected to face the Southport Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Police said paramedics were called to an address in Waverley Street, Southport, just after 2:00am on Wednesday, where they found a man had been shot in the back.

He could not be revived and died a short time later as a result of his injury.

Police said the pair had been in a relationship for six months and the woman was living in the house.

Detective Acting Inspector Matt Ward said a gun was found at the home.

He said it was unclear if the weapon at the property was registered, but found it "disturbing" that it was accessible.

"There is legislation which controls people's possession and storage of firearms and that clearly has been breached on this occasion," he said.

He said another man and woman were at the home at the time of the shooting but are not suspects and are assisting police.

Neighbour Leon Ran said it is normally a safe and quiet street.

"I can't believe this has happened. I have lived here for two years and this has not happened before," he said.

"It makes it feel so dangerous here.

"I feel so bad right now, maybe I will move to another place."
