Gok Wan sparks concern on This Morning as he tells viewers to wash raw chicken

Gok Wan sparked concern from viewers of This Morning on Friday with his recommendation about cooking chicken.

The 45-year-old fashion guru, who has released cookbooks, was performing on a cooking segment alongside presenters Alison Hammond and Rochelle Humes.

He was demonstrating how to make chicken wings, and as he was detailing which spices and sauces to use, he told viewers to wash the chicken.

"So the first thing is you're gonna get your chicken wings from the butchers or the supermarket, and you're going to wash them, always," he said.

"Then you're going to pat them down, if you pat them down it makes them crispier in the oven."

One viewer tweeted, warning: "Do not wash raw chicken #thismorning ".

"I thought you weren't supposed to wash chicken?" asked another.

"# ThisMorning so irresponsible of Gok to tell people to wash the chicken!" added a third.

A statement on the NHS website warns the public to never wash chicken before cooking it as it can spread dangerous bacteria.

It reads: "The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued the advice as many people do not realise that washing raw poultry can spread bacteria, leading to an increased risk of food poisoning.

"The bacteria in question, campylobacter, is the most common cause of food poisoning in the world and affects about 280,000 people in the UK each year.

"New guidance is intended to remind people that washing raw chicken before cooking increases the likelihood of infection through splashing the bacteria on to work surfaces, clothing and cooking equipment.

"This is known as cross-contamination.

"Washing is therefore not recommended – it is also unnecessary as thorough cooking will kill any bacteria."

Mean while, Alison Hammond left fans in hysterics as her attempt to dive right into a beauty segment went a little wrong.

The 45-year-old ended up mistaking a hair mask for a lotion for her legs, rubbing it in before she realised her error and burst out lauging.
