'Going crazy' - Former Nottingham Forest midfielder makes plea amid coronavirus outbreak

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Jermaine Jenas has urged football's governing bodies to complete the domestic season when possible, as he backed the move to suspend games.

Football across the Premier League and English Football League has halted until April 3 at the earliest due to the coronavirus outbreak, but it is entirely possible the suspension will last in to the summer.

Jenas says it is essential league programmes are completed with clubs still having games to play which could have massive implications, including Forest, who are currently in the Championship play-off places.

"There's a part of me that says get rid of the cup competitions, move the Euros to next year and get the leagues done as soon as possible, even if it's in June," he said on BBC Radio Five Live last night.

"The domestic leagues are the most important thing. I get (Manchester) City fans will be going crazy right now talking about the Champions League and how this is their best opportunity to win.

"My mind goes more towards promotion from the Championship and the impact on teams there.

"Relegation from the Premier League too. You go down the leagues and look at the impact on lower league clubs as well."

The former England midfielder says it was right choice to suspend fixtures rather than play behind closed doors, pointing to the example of Paris Saint Germain fans taking to the streets en masse to celebrate their win over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League this week.

"Everybody is in a similar position, not just in sport, but in their everyday working lives where everything is up in the air," he said.

"It's a little bit mad at the minute. For everybody missing sport, they have to get their heads around the fact this is far more important.

"We've seen playing behind closed doors doesn't work for a number of reasons. We saw scenes at Paris Saint Germain where you had people gathering outside the stadium, which is exactly what you're trying to avoid.

"I imagine we'd have seen that in our own league. Imagine the streets of Liverpool for their last home game.

"It was the right move essentially."
