Gogglebox viewers want to ban politics from the show

Gogglebox viewers have been sharing their thoughts following Friday's episode, calling for a ban on politics on the Channel 4 series. It comes after one of the stars of the show, Mary Killen, received backlash for defending Prime Minister Boris Johnson over the partygate scandal, saying to her husband Giles on the show that the PM had been "ambushed".

In Friday's episode, the show's cast were giving their opinions on a number of programmes from the week's TV schedule. This included two political segments.

The first was a clip of Mr Johnson's apology which was aired on the news after he was fined for partaking in a birthday party at No 10 during lockdown. The PM had insisted the incident had lasted for just 10 minutes and said a cake hadn't been opened.

The cast was also shown a report on Chancellor Rishi Sunak's wife Akshata Murty, who said she will pay UK taxes on her overseas income, following a row over her non-domicile status. Birmingham Live reports viewers were fed up with the political elements of the show, with some saying they watched Gogglebox to "get away from" politics.

They called for a ban on the subject, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts. One viewer, @philm2244, said: "Please dont go all political on us. I watch #Gogglebox to escape this Boris rubbish."

A second, @DonnaDlm71, wrote: "Even #Gogglebox has gone all bloody politically biased as well. Tiresome. I watch this to escape all that crap. Disappointing. Might not bother in future."

While @Hyther12 echoed: "Wish #Gogglebox would stick to normal TV and not follow any political agenda regardless, it just divides us all on here. Just saying." And @clsyoshimoo commented: "Politics again #Gogglebox. @Minzi added: "Well the programmes on TV must have been s*** this week, seen far too much politics on this week's #Gogglebox."
