Gogglebox stars' emotional reaction to the death of Prince Philip

Stars of Gogglebox are well-known for their arch responses and sarcastic comments.

But when it came to Friday (April 16) night's programme, instead of giggles there was raw emotion on display.

The Goggleboxers were watching the announcement of the death of Prince Philip.

At 99, the Duke of Edinburgh was the longest-serving British royal consort.

And the sofa stars had their thoughts firmly with Queen Elizabeth II, who is going on with her life without her partner of 73 years by her side.

Watching Maxine Croxall report the news on the BBC, Giles said: "She's very moved, isn't she, Mary?"

Jenny and Lee watched open-mouthed, with Jenny wiping away tears as they discussed the announcement.

"Oh my God," Lee said, his hands by his face, and Jenny added: "I don't know what to say, I think it's the first time I've been lost for words."

"I'll let you off this time, you can cry," her mate responded with characteristic fondness.

On Twitter, some joined the celebrities as they mourned the passing of the 99-year-old Prince.

"That was so poignant and moving #Gogglebox Thank you," said David Garland, while Mrs Lisa Shaw added: "That was lovely #Gogglebox . Respectful. Thank you. #PrincePhilip "

But others were concerned that many of them appeared to be finding out about the death many hours after it happened.

Paul K said bluntly: "They all only found out about Prince Phillip dying last Friday night when it was dark apparently #Gogglebox "

It's the Wrong David Honey added: "This was just weird, soz. I don't see why they'd pretend they all just found out the news as the production crew were filming them in their homes? Lol #Gogglebox "

  • Gogglebox is on Friday night at 9pm on Channel 4
