Gogglebox star Shaun Malone bravely shares on his mental health struggles

Gogglebox star Shaun Malone has opened up about his mental health "struggles".

The Channel 4 star explained why he has previously "never been open" about the subject matter in a message to his online fans.

Shaun, 25, used Instagram Stories to talk about "owning" his mental health battles after someone made a "dig" at him.

"I’ve realised that all the time I’m saying about men and their mental health and we should be open," the TV critic wrote to his 18,200 followers.

"But I’ve realised that I’ve been quite hypocritical, because I’ve struggled with my mental health on and off over the last 10 years and I’ve never been open about it," he continued.

The Gogglebox favourite, who became a dad for the first time this summer, also revealed he opted to chat openly following someone making a "dig" about his mental health.

“I’ve always felt too embarrassed to talk about it, and yesterday I got a dig made at my mental health by somebody I know, so I thought I’ll just come out and own it," he added to his Instagram statement.

"What I’m saying is like, fellas, we’re all in this together. Loads of us struggle so, it is what it is."

Last year, the armchair critic revealed he once almost died as a teenager.

At the age of 15, Shaun was left with brain damage after suffering a stroke.

Speaking on the Coaching From The Sofa podcast, he said: "In 2010 I got sinusitis and in some way, the infection found its way back to my brain.

"My brain started swelling and my skull started crushing it so my mum took me to A&E saying 'look he’s poorly!' and they said it was sinusitis.

"And then I collapsed one day at home and I ended up going into a coma and they said to my mum and dad that I had a less than 10 per cent chance of living".

He went on the explain how he was in a coma "for a few weeks" and his parents - fellow Gogglebox stars Tom and Julie Malone- were warned he may have brain damage.

"I essentially had a stroke, I couldn’t move my left arm, my left leg, even the left side of my face. My sister has got pictures of me trying to eat," he added.

Earlier this year, Shaun became a parent for the first time when he welcomed his son into the world back in July.

Announcing the joyous news on Twitter, the doting dad wrote: "Super happy to announce the birth of my son Louis Malone."

"Thanks for everyone's interest, mother and baby are both doing well. I couldn't be more proud of my girlfriend. I wouldn't be that brave having my belly cut open!"

Shaun appears on Gogglebox alongside his mum Julie, dad Tom Sr and brother Tom Jr.
