Gogglebox star Jenny Newby makes cheeky Rishi Sunak dig

Gogglebox star Jenny Newby has made a cheeky dig at the prime minister while watching the coverage of King Charles III's coronation.

The historic event, which took place on May 6, saw dignitaries, celebrities and royals from all across the world attend to bear while millions or people lined the streets in London. The coronation at Westminster Abbey was also televised for those watching at home or at local screening sites.

Naturally, Channel 4's popular show featured some of the key moments during tonight's episode, May 12 and Jenny couldn't help herself but take a cheeky swipe at prime minister Rishi Sunak's height. For the first time in history, Tory MP Penny Mordaunt became the first woman to fulfill the role as sword-bearer during the extravagant ceremony.

Watching the procession, Jenny made a joke in reference to the PM being 5ft 6inches tall, saying: "[Rishi] Sunak couldn't do it, because the sword is bigger than him."

Her comment prompted some giggles from Lee as the pair watched Ms Mordaunt, dressed in a custom-made teal outfit carry the 17th-century Sword of State into the Abbey before presenting it to the King. She then held and carried the sword, which is covered in red velvet with silver gilt rose, thistle and fleur-de-lys emblems, for the majority of the service.

The sword's silver gilt hilt features the form of a lion and unicorn and the wooden scabbard. It symbolises royal power and being able to decide between good and evil, and the King accepting his duty and knightly virtues.

This was the first time in history that the Jewelled Sword of Offering had been carried and presented to the monarch by a woman.

Gogglebox airs Fridays at 9pm on Channel 4.
