Gogglebox rules stars must follow and the surprising ban enforced on families

Appearing on TV while watching TV seems like the perfect job, and it can be a dream come true for the cast members of the popular Channel 4 show Gogglebox.

The show has been going strong for eight glorious years seeing the families that the nation has grown to love come and go.

We've watched the Tapper and the Michael kids blossom, the Siddiqui family grow with the arrival of Baasit's children Amelia and Theodore, and even said goodbye to original Liverpool favourites Leon and June who have sadly passed away.

But what does being a part of the show actually entail and what rules do the stars have to follow?

One key rule that has led to many families leaving the show is the so-called ‘no-celeb’ rule.

Because of this rule, we have seen the Moffatt family leave the programme due to Scarlett's fame and the Tappers were temporarily axed when Amy appeared on Celebs Go Dating.

Since leaving Gogglebox, Scarlett has gone on to star in I'm A Celebrity and has presented on Streetmate, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and Radio 1.

Another rule is that you cannot actually apply to be on Gogglebox. The producers will find you if they want you.

Creator Stephen Lambert previously said, to the Radio Times: "Everybody on Gogglebox has been found and persuaded to be on the show and I think that's the key to why they are likeable and why the show works, because we get to know these people."

"We've never advertised for people on Gogglebox."

Most families were either recommended to producers, such as Giles and Mary and the Siddiqui family, or the creators find the cast themselves.

For example, Vicar Kate was officiating a wedding back in 2013 when she led a Flash mob and the video of it went viral. It wasn't long after that the Gogglebox creators were knocking on Kate's door.

Another surprising rule is that the cast members aren't allowed to change where they sit.

Speaking on TikTok, Tom Malone who appears on the show, said: "Going back to six and a half years ago when we filmed our first episode of Gogglebox, I think it was season four, we just sat in those positions.

“That was just the natural positions we sat in. That was fine. However moving on from then, we were never allowed to change those positions. That's because people don't like change."

Stars on the show are typically expected to be available for eight hours of filming, split over two days and while they are filming, the cameramen operate the cameras from a different room in the house to help make the show more authentic.

Gogglebox stars are paid to be on the show, but neither the cast members or production have ever said how much they actually earn.

Tom Malone said: "Without a doubt, one of the best perks of Gogglebox is that every time we film, which is twice a week, the crew get us a takeaway of our choosing.

"It's literally one of the most amazing things about the show, honest to God. It's the best."

Some stars have shown that they live a lavish lifestyle, with Scarlett Mofatt paying off her parents mortgage.

But it is unclear whether the money earned is from the show itself or the opportunities and endorsements that surround being a part of the show.
