Gogglebox on the hunt for new stars who 'don't want to be on TV' after tragic year

Gogglebox bosses are on the hunt for new sofa stars after it suffered a string of tragedies this year.

The reality TV show has become one of the most loved shows on British TV, but producers are hoping to switch things up by introducing people ‘who don’t want to be on telly’.

Executive producer Victoria Ray is in search of family and friends who don’t necessarily think to try to be funny, but just are without trying – much like fan favourites Jenny Newby, 53, and her best friend, Lee Riley, 53, as the Mirror reports.

The TV boss said: “We pick people who don't want to be on telly.

“The ideal people are ones who don't know that they're funny. We like people who are charismatic, engaging and who don't necessarily see themselves as TV personalities.”

In terms of making an impact on the show, Victoria explained that those ‘without a filter’ always flourish.

"It's good when they have no filter because then they don't second-guess themselves when they're talking.

"We basically want people that you warm to and want to see in your living rooms.”

Mary and Marina on Gogglebox (Channel 4)

Gogglebox bosses are scrambling to find some new faces after the show lost three of it’s adored stars this year, including Mary Cook - one half of Mary and Marina - from Bedminster, who passed away last month aged 92.

Marina won't be returning to the show after the death of her "dearest friend."

Much-loved cast member Pete McGarry also died this year at the age of 71.

His sad passing left Gogglebox viewers devastated, and the news that his beloved widow Linda would not be returning without him was another huge blow to fans.

Tragedy struck again last month when Andrew Michael passed away aged 61.

Andrew’s grieving wife wife Carolyne and their children Alex and Louis have also decided not to continue the show without their father.

The three sad deaths have shook the Gogglebox family hard, and now, producers are hoping to find some new faces that will steal the hearts of the nation again after the incredibly tough couple of months.

Elsewhere, Paige Deville and her mum Sally Hayward quit the show ahead of the new series leaving an open space for a new family to nab their spot in front of the cameras.

Paige decided to pull out of the show after she and her mum had an ‘irreversible’ row.

Lifting the lid on why she left, Paige told Birmingham Live : “There have been problems within the family and my mum was given an ultimatum.

“The decision means I have nothing to do with her now. I think the decision is irreversible. It is very sad but that’s life unfortunately.”

Gogglebox continues Friday at 9PM on Channel 4.
