Gogglebox make Prince Philip 'edit' as Channel 4 faces backlash over reaction to his death

Gogglebox made a hasty edit in honour of Prince Philip as Channel 4 faced backlash from some viewers for not changing its programming enough in response to the Duke of Edinburgh's death.

Just after 12pm on Friday, it was announced that the Duke had passed away at the age of 99, with a statement from Buckingham Palace reading: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Both BBC and ITV immediately cut to news broadcasts to cover reaction to Prince Philip's death, with both, as well as BBC2 making significant changes to their schedules to bring rolling coverage of his passing.

This meant that soaps Emmerdale, Coronation Street and EastEnders were all scrapped, along with the highly anticipated Masterchef final.

But over on Channel 4, other than an extended edition of the Channel 4 news at 7pm, programmes did go ahead as normal with Hollyoaks, The Circle and Gogglebox airing as intended.

But Gogglebox did make a big change right at the start of its latest episode at 9pm, when narrator Craig Cash introduced the show by saying: "In the week where we said goodbye to His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh."

Channel 4's reaction to Prince Philip's death has divided viewers, with some angry they didn't make more changes and others pleased that they didn't follow the lead of BBC and ITV.

One blasted: "Channel 4 is disgusting and insensitive, they have carried on with their usual programming ‘Find It, Fix It, Flog It’ instead of running segments on the death of Prince Philip like the other major broadcasters.

"It’s unbecoming of Channel 4 and a national broadcaster."

Another tweeted: "every channel is showing tributes to Prince Philip and Channel 4 have got GOGGLEBOX. God help us."

However, others thought Channel 4 got it right, with one supporter of their approach posting: "Wall to wall coverage on the three main channels was more than enough. You got it right ⁦ @Channel4."

Echoing those sentiments, another commented: "Prince Philip has died but people might want to look at something else. And the country is pretty miserable, there hasn't been much optimism for about a year now. Need something else rather then all this."
