Gogglebox Jenny and Lee's incredible friendship and unlikely start to reality show fame

Gogglebox's Jenny Newby and Lee Riley have been regularly entertaining viewers from the living room of their Hull caravan since they were picked to join the Channel 4 cast back in 2014.

The pals' friendship has an even longer history, with Lee sending social media into meltdown this week with a picture of of him holidaying with Jenny from 2004.

In the vintage snap, the pair were seen dressed in their finery and beaming with their arms around each other on board a cruise ship.

Despite their obvious closeness, Lee has joked, in his typical sarcastic style, that he didn't like the look of Jenny when he first saw her.

The pair gave an interview to Ireland's Big Issue magazine about their friendship this month where they spoke about their initial meeting and how they came to land a part on Channel 4's ground-breaking show.

“Lee was a customer at my pub, The Crown Inn in Paull," Jenny said.

“He became a regular in 1994 and used to come in pretty much every night with his partner and we were friends from the off.

“We’ve been best friends ever since.”

Lee added: "I wish I’ve never gone in the pub – it cost me a fortune.

“When I first met her she had a perm and I can remember thinking, ‘She needs a haircut’. We were firm friends immediately."

“I don’t think we’ve ever had an argument. We’re too placid to argue. She makes me laugh too much for me to ever fall out with her,” added Lee.

Years later, Jenny was attending Beverley Races when she had a chance encounter with a researcher for Gogglebox.

When Jenny's husband wasn't keen on taking part, she asked BFF Lee if he wanted to join her at the audition instead.

"I wasn’t [at Beverley Races] but she asked me if I wanted to sit and do a test filming with her. I’d never seen Gogglebox, it had only just started, so I walked into filming swearing my head off because she’d got me out of bed on my day off," said Lee.

Lee previously admitted he wasn't sold on the idea when asked to take part and told the Hull Daily Mail: "To be honest I didn’t want to do it. I’d say it took her about an hour and a half to talk me into it."

But luckily for us, Jenny managed to twist his arm and the pair have been regular features on the show ever since.

The duo even took the big step of moving in together just so that they could continue appearing on Gogglebox during lockdown.

Hull Live reported that they had moved out of their homes to live side-by-side in a small caravan.

The best friends are now heading back to their own homes after spending more than two months in each other's company.

In last week's episode, Jenny said: "Just think Lee, what are you going to do when I go home? I'll miss you when I go home. Have you bought me a leaving present?"

Lee sassily responded: "Yeah. A f**king suitcase."

Jenny then told her pal: "Well I’ll miss you but you just don’t like admitting it."

To which Lee retorted: "I f**king won’t."
