Gogglebox issues apology to Eamonn Holmes over 'idiotic and cruel' edit

Gogglebox has issued an apology to Eamonn Holmes after he criticised the show for an "idiotic and cruel" edit.

The TV presenter and his wife Ruth Langsford featured in the first episode of the latest series of Celebrity Gogglebox on Friday night - but he has spoken out after a heartfelt story was cut.

Eamonn, who presents This Morning with wife Ruth, took to Twitter to voice his discontent over how the episode was edited.

In it, the couple was seen watching a clip from the BBC's Ambulance programme in which a boy saved his father's life by calling 999 and resuscitating him, following a suspected heart attack.

The 60-year-old said he was "hurt beyond belief" after his emotional discussion about his dad's death was replaced with "a funny story", the Manchester Evening News reports.

Instead of airing the presenter's heartfelt comments, producers replaced them with his tongue-in-cheek hero comparison to when he had rushed Ruth to hospital when she was about to give birth to their son Jack, now 18.

Eamonn slammed producers on social media after Twitter followers heartlessly dismissed his comments on a "tragedy that has forever haunted my family."

A Gogglebox spokesperson has responded with: "We have apologised to Eamonn over what happened in this week’s episode. We understand and respect Eamonn’s feelings on such a deeply personal story.

"We have taken the decision to edit the episode for future repeats and All 4. We look forward to working with Eamonn and Ruth for the rest of the series."

Eamonn has also responded to the apology commenting: "For those who judged me wrongly. I think it's important you read this. It was a bad edit and we move on with what should be a fun experience on what is almost always a very entertaining programme. Thank you @C4Gogglebox."

Celebrity Gogglebox continues on Friday at 9pm on Channel 4.
