Gogglebox former cast members we don't see on TV anymore

Gogglebox has been one of the nation's favourite TV shows since first airing on our screens in 2013.

And in that short amount of time, the series has become one of the most-watched shows on television.

Many viewers have their favourite cast members, some of who have been on the show since the very beginning, such as Stephen Webb and the Siddiqui family.

There have also been a lot of Gogglebox legends who we’ve lost over the years including Leon and June Bernicoff, Mary Cook, Andrew Michael and Pete McGarry.

Nearly nine years later, and plenty of families have come and gone - but where are some of the stars now?

Here is a look at what happened to some of the most popular stars of Gogglebox's past.

Paige Deville and mum Sally Hayward

There was a shock in September when Paige Deville announced on Twitter that she was leaving Gogglebox, along with a scathing message about the show bosses.

The 25-year-old said she had made the decision to leave the show due to a number of factors, one being the "restrictiveness" of the show.

She wrote: "I have made the decision to walk away from Gogglebox.

"It’s been an experience but one I cannot continue with due to long hours of filming, restrictiveness, control of our actions and opinions & zero aftercare support but hey who cares about ex cast, their NTA winners."

In further discussions on the reasons behind her exit, Paige explained that it was caused by a fallout with mum Sally Hayward, who had sat alongside her on the sofa since they joined the cast in 2019.

In a conversation with BirminghamLive, she said: "There have been problems within the family and my mum was given an ultimatum. The decision means I have nothing to do with her now. I think the decision is irreversible.

"It is very sad but that's life unfortunately.

"My mum said she would no longer be filming Gogglebox. The show offered me an opportunity to work with another family member but I didn't want to work with anyone else. My mum and myself had started the journey together and I wasn't going to film with anyone else."

She also said was aware that there were more popular characters on the show, such as Blackpool-based Pete and Sophie Sandiford, and when they weren't available the producers would ask her at the last minute.

Paige went on to explain that she had had enough of filming due to the long hours alongside running her recruitment business - being paid £100 for filming sessions which would begin at 3.30pm and finish at 12.30am.

She added: "At one point my mum had her arm around me for four hours and they didn't want her to move her arm. It isn't as glamorous as you might think. It is very hard work."

A spokesperson for Gogglebox said: "The welfare of contributors – past and present – is of paramount importance and robust protocols are in place to support contributors before, during and after taking part in the series."

The Michaels Family
The Michael's family on Gogglebox (PA)

They were one of the original families on Gogglebox since it first aired in 2013, however Channel 4 cut the Michael family from the show when dad Andy decided to run for UKIP.

The Michael Family - consisting of parents Andy and Carolyne and two of their children Alex and Louis - were forced to give up their place on the show after it was revealed Andy had broken the rules by holding a political seat while maintaining his appearance on the show.

In a statement announcing the families departure, Channel 4 said: "It's with great regret that the Michaels are no longer in the show, sadly any Gogglebox cast member who becomes a candidate for a political party will have to step down from their involvement in Gogglebox.

"They have been excellent contributors to Gogglebox, and we are very grateful for all they have given to the show".

Carolyne revealed that she did not want to leave and found watching the series they were not involved in "too painful".

However in the 2015 election, Andy failed to secure the Hastings and Rye seat in Parliament and so the family were invited back to the show.

Andy then made the decision to step away from his political career so that the family could return to Gogglebox.

Sadly, Andy died in August this year and shortly after his family announced they would not be returning to the show.

Mary Cook & Marina Wingrove
Gogglebox star Marina Wingrove quit the show after Mary Cook sadly passed away this summer (Channel 4)

Mary and Marina were best friends from Bristol.

They joined the show in 2016 for series eight and often left lest viewers in hysterics with their wine-drinking, racy comments and attempts to make sense of the modern world.

The friends met while living at the St Monica Trust retirement village in Bristol nine years ago, and Marina still lives there now.

In August this year, viewers were heartbroken following the sad death of Mary Cook who was 92.

Channel 4 released a statement that read: "We are extremely saddened to share that Gogglebox star Mary Cook died in hospital this weekend at the age of 92 with her family by her side."

Mary was a hilarious member of the cast who often appeared in the show with her best friend Marina Wingrove. After losing her best friend, it has been reported that Marina has decided not to return to the show.

Marina made a sweet tribute to her friend and co-star following her death: "My dearest friend Mary, treasured memories will last forever. Our laughs and giggles and our ups and downs will forever be in my heart. Deepest sympathies to Mary’s family. Love Marina.”

The Gilbeys

In a year of unfortunate losses for the show, viewers said a sudden goodbye to another well-loved contributing family after Pete McGarry in 2021, who was joined on screen by the Gilbeys, died from bowel cancer in June last year.

Pete, his wife Linda and her son, George Gilbey, originally joined the show in 2013 during the show's second series and quickly became a firm favourite with viewers.

The Essex-based family left viewers in stitches, but their time on the show didn't initially last for very long.

The popular family were axed from Gogglebox when George entered the Celebrity Big Brother house in August 2014.

Confirming the news on Twitter, the family tweeted: "It is true that we won't be on the next series of Gogglebox. We had a lovely time filming with them and wish the cast and crew lots of luck."

Gogglebox producer Chantal Boyle said they would not be in the fourth series as it "wouldn’t work" once George had been in the famous bungalow.

Chantal said the family had been told in advance they would forfeit their place, but they could not resist the financial offer for George to join the CBB cast.

Following his stint in the Big Brother house where he finished in forth place, George and his family returned to the show in 2016 where Linda and Pete became key members of the show's cast - George made fewer appearances in this time.

Following Pete's tragic death to bowel cancer earlier this year, the family confirmed they would not be returning for the new series.

Fellow cast member Julie Malone paid a touching tribute to the recently deceased stars of the show by dedicating an NTA award to Mary, Andy and Pete.

Chris Ashby-Steed

Stephen Webb and Chris Ashby-Steed had viewers in stitches every week with their sarcastic one-liners and hilarious gags.

Often it was Stephen delivering the jokes.

Unfortunately the couple did split up, but Chris and Stephen remained friends and continued filming together until 2018.

However, behind-the-scenes the two of them were secretly locked in a bitter feud.

Last year, Chris confessed leaving the show after feuding with his sidekick left him feeling suicidal.

In an interview with Sunday Mirror, he said: "There have been times where I’ve felt so low that I think, ‘how can I kill myself?’."

Chris vanished from the screen after a planned TV project involving the two fell through and he has since suffered from depression.

He said: “Stephen decided to copy me in to an email to the studio saying he was going to terminate our joint venture. After he sent that email I didn’t speak to him for a little while because I was hurt by it.

“Then the studio called and said they would like to offer us the position back on Gogglebox. I spoke to Stephen and his attitude was ‘I’m not sure I can put up with you every other week filming’. Which was a bit of a blow."

Gogglebox’s producers agreed the two could appear with new partners on alternate weeks, but this didn't come to fruition.

Stephen initially brought in mum Pat in 2018 and now appears with his new husband, Daniel Lustig, who has become a regular fixture since first appearing on the show in 2019.

Sadly Chris has not returned to our screens, but lives with husband Tony.

Sandi Bogle and Sandra Martin
Gogglebox gigglers Sandi and Sandra appeared on the show until 2017 (Channel 4)

Brixton-based Sandra and Sandi are sure to go down in Gogglebox history as two of its most iconic stars.

But the takeaway-loving twosome were torn apart in 2016 when Sandi decided to quit the show, leaving Sandra to continue with her daughter Chanchez.

Now a famous face, Sandi took part in many reality TV shows, including Celebs On The Farm, Celebrity 100% Hotter and Celebrity Fat Fighters.

She also entered the Celebrity Big Brother house in 2017 and was sixth to be evicted.

Sandi took part in Channel 4’s Famous and Fighting Crime in 2019 and has campaigned for an end to knife crime ever since the tragic death of her nephew in 2017.

With the chemistry never the same with her daughter, because certain topics were off-limits, Sandra decided to quit in July 2017.

Sandra lived in a hotel after moving out of her house once she quit the Channel 4 show, but then revealed she had spent all the money she had earned.

Speaking publicly, she said many of her friends were on benefits so after leaving Gogglebox it felt like she had "won the jackpot".

She shared her money generously with friends, giving out £100's to them if they needed it and always buying food and drinks.

This all got too much for the public favourite however and she said once she realised people were taking advantage, she "had to get out".

Sandra then moved into temporary accommodation, which she paid for with her fee from her role as the Spirit of the Ring in Aladdin.

But ill health forced her to pull out earlier and with no cash coming in - she feared becoming homeless.

The coronavirus outbreak has been devastating for Sandra, who has lost five loved ones amid the global pandemic.

She lost her friend's dad, her sister-in-law, her uncle, and her good friend to coronavirus and sister-in-law within a week of each other.

Steph and Dom Parker
Gogglebox Steph and Dom Parker (Channel 4)

Steph and Dom became notable for enjoying a glass of bubby while binge-watching the tv back when the series first aired eight years ago.

After four years on Gogglebox, the couple quit in 2016 to focus on running their bed and breakfast, The Salutation, in Kent.

The two also starred in reality TV shows such as Four In a Bed and The Jump, which left Dom with suspected concussion after a nasty fall.

Steph and Dom even took to the stage for 2017's Let's Sing and Dance For Comic Relief to perform Dead Ringer For Love by Meatloaf and Cher.

In March 2020, the couple revealed the sad news that they were shutting the doors to their £5 million hotel after it went bust.

In a statement, Dom said: "We are sorry to confirm that The Salutation Hotel Ltd, which has been managing The Salutation, has indeed become insolvent."

"We are in discussions with other interested parties and we aim to have the hotel back up and running very soon, under new management."

They bought the Grade I-listed manor house in 2004 for £2.6 million, but after shooting to fame in 2017 they turned it into a hotel.

Along with his Gogglebox fame, Dom reached the semi finals of Celebrity MasterChef in 2019.

The couple are now said to live in their holiday home in Spain's Canary Islands.

Jay Makin

It's rare anyone can say they shot to fame purely for their silence on a national TV show - but that's exactly the case for the show's Jay Makin.

Without even saying a word, Jay became one of Gogglebox's most popular stars and was even nicknamed by fans as 'Silent Jay'.

During his time on Gogglebox, he was the boyfriend of Eve Woerdenweber, appearing on the sofa with her mum Viv and German-born dad Ralf from The Wirral.

Gogglebox viewers were often left in hysterics as Jay sat in silence while the family had debates and interesting discussions.

Silent Jay proved that you don't have to be loud, angry or drop innuendos to get yourself a fanbase, but it all came to a dramatic end in 2015 when Jay split up with Eve.

Jay insisted filming with his ex-girlfriend and her family would not be awkward and there were "no hard feelings" as they had decided to remain friends, despite Eve's new boyfriend.

But despite reportedly signing up with his ex-girlfriend's family for another series of the show, viewers were upset that he just vanished and was never seen again.

A Channel 4 spokesperson told Mirror Online : "It’s with great regret that Silent Jay is no longer in this series of Gogglebox.

"He has been an excellent contributor to Gogglebox, and we are very grateful for all he has given to the show."

Jay now keeps a low profile on social media but was working at Baa Bar Fleet Street in Liverpool after leaving the show.

He also decided to have a makeover, getting rid of his long hair.

Reverend Kate Bottley
Gogglebox Rev kate and husband Graham (Channel 4)

Reverend Kate was dubbed the "nation's favourite vicar" during her time on Gogglebox.

The Church of England minister and husband Graham shot to fame during their five series of the show.

Gogglebox viewers were baffled when Kate and Graham went missing in 2015, but she explained they simply taking a break to support their daughter while she took her GCSE exams.

She wrote on Twitter: "Hi, our daughter has her GCSES so we needed a break from the cameras."

However, their temporary break turned into a permanent one as they never returned to Gogglebox.

After leaving Gogglebox in 2016, Kate has starred in various shows including Celebrity MasterChef like fellow star Dom Parker.

She also regularly presents the Pause For Thought segment on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show and has fronted the Prayer For The Day on Radio 4.

As well as appearing on Songs Of Praise, Kate presented BBC One's main Easter programme in 2016.

The Reverend has turned her hand to journalism and has written for the likes of the Guardian, the Independent and the Radio Times.

She also did a trek for charity last year as part of Pilgrimage: The Road to Santiago.

The Allen Sisters

Remember the Allen girls?

Gogglebox fans loved tuning in to watching their antics during the first two series.

They were made up of three sisters, Charlotte, Gemma and Louise, who all looked strikingly similar to each other and had us guessing who was who.

The three sisters, who are from Essex, were all living at home with their parents when they starred on the show during series one and two.

Charlotte reportedly had a job in fashion when she starred on the programme, but they have all disappeared from the public eye since they left.

The Tapper Family

The Tapper family, which consists of mum Nikki, dad Jonathan and kids Josh and Amy, were firm favourites when they burst onto screens in 2013.

But the lovable North Londoners began to be whittled down when Josh moved into politics and got a place on the Government Communications Apprenticeship scheme.

TV bosses said at the time the star was on a "break" from the show and left the door open for him to return, while keeping parents Nikki and Jonathan and sister Amy on screen.

But Josh admitted that he had firmly slammed that door shut while entering Downing Street, saying: "The option to go back is always there but I want to move away from that and the focus is now very much on my job.

"Of course, I miss it and the sitting on the couch watching TV. But I am more focused on my future, it’s a more a secure path."

During his time in Number 10, Josh was a campaign assistant for the Prime Minister's Office and Cabinet Office before working as assistant campaign manager.

However, in 2020 a Downing Street source revealed that now Josh had left for new pastures, having bagged a job at Demos – a leading British think tank and charity.

In October 2018, younger sister Amy also quit the show to take part in Celebs Go Dating - and while she ultimately did not find the love of her life she did gain a lot of confidence and made some new celeb pals.

The coronavirus pandemic nearly had a devastating impact on the family as dad Jonathan was left fighting for his life.

The 52-year-old was struggling to breathe and could barely move, leading to his loved ones taking it in turns to care for him.

Thankfully, Jonathan made a full recovery and the family credited his recent weight loss to helping him fight the virus, which he battled for weeks.

June and Leon Bernicoff
Gogglebox stars Leon and June Bernicoff at home in Allerton, Liverpool (Liverpool ECHO)

No list of ex-Gogglebox cast members is complete without mention of two of the show's most popular contributors and u ndoubtedly one of the nation's favourite couples.

June and Leon first appeared on the show back in 2013.

With their warmth and easy banter, the Liverpool-based couple became national treasures from their sofa in Liverpool.

However, their time on the show came to a devastating end in December 2017 when 83-year-old Leon died.

June left Gogglebox straight after Leon's death on the basis it wouldn't be the same without her husband of 60 years.

The show dedicated a very special tribute to Leon two months after he died.

June, 82, sadly died in May 2020, after a short illness, with many heartbroken at her loss.

Channel 4 and production company Studio Lambert issued a statement on behalf of her family, confirming the sad news.

The statement read: "As the first couple to be cast for Gogglebox back in 2013, June and her husband Leon were a huge part of the programme's success.

"Their warmth, wit and contrasting personalities endeared them to the nation during the course of the first 10 series.

"Following Leon's passing in December 2017, June wrote her first book, Leon And June: Our Story, which was a deeply moving and entertaining chronicle of their 60-year love affair.

"A remarkably independent, principled woman with a vivacious sense of humour and a huge passion for life, June will be dearly missed by the entire Gogglebox family, cast and crew.”

Gogglebox wrapped up for 2021 on December 10, with a final celebrity episode broadcast on December 17.

Channel 4 have not yet released the date of the show's return, however Gogglebox stars Jenny Newby and Lee Riley confirmed on Twitter on December 17 that the show will be back in February 2022.
