Gogglebox fans accuse show of 'scaremongering' as cast watch PM's Omicron announcement

Viewers have accused Gogglebox of 'scaremongering' after tonight's episode showed the cast reacting to a Boris Johnson recent press conference on the Omicron Covid variant.

The first segment of tonight's show saw the well-known cast sit down to watch Saturday's (November 27) press briefing, led by the Prime Minister.

Before the show cut to Downing Street, the cast seemed shocked to discover two cases of the so-called Omicron variant had been found in the UK.

Viewers were then shown a repeat of Saturday's press conference, where Mr Johnson told the UK "we need to take targeted and proportionate measures now as a precaution while we find out more (about the variant)."

"Are we about to get more restrictions?" Pete exclaimed. "We're back to the masks," added Sophie.

The focus then turned to how the new variant could affect people's Christmas plans, with the PM saying he was confident everyone could expect a "considerably better Christmas" this year.

"He's not saying we'll have a normal Christmas," said Vanessa Malone. And Pete said: "Watch everyone panic buy Christmas stuff now."

Fans tuning in to tonight's episode have questioned why the segment was used - with some accusing the show of 'scaremongering'.

"Gogglebox scaremongering again," said @kimlewis64311114.

"...For goodness sake Gogglebox, you gave that enough time hey (sic), pretty sure the editing was very precise!", added @oohilovedogs.

And @leeleeCThomas said: "Why are they acting like they don't know what the restrictions were going to be? The whole country knew because the media announced it first."
