Gogglebox fan 'obsessed' with dark Giles and Mary theory

Gogglebox stars Giles Wood and Mary Killen are firm favourites with fans of the show, but some viewers are less than kind when it comes to comments on social media.

The married couple have viewers in stitches with their dry sense of humour and blunt quips while critiquing the week's best television. The pair, who call each other "nutty" have been together for more than three decades.

Each Friday night, they invite the nation into their cluttered and mismatched Wiltshire cottage, as they sit beside each other in their separate chairs.

As the popular Channel 4 programme prepares to celebrate a huge decade on our screens, Giles and Mary spoke to the Guardian about what it's really like appearing on Gogglebox.

The couple said they rarely use social media after receiving some cruel comments, and one even convinced themselves the pair were "axe murderers". Giles explained they had to quickly "develop a thick skin" though they "eventually won people round".

He said: "There were some pretty negative things on Twitter. Sort of Giles and Mary 'Jog on, bye'. The introductory film of our house had an axe going into a tree stump, so one peculiar person was obsessed with the idea that we were axe murderers."

Mary added: "What happened originally was that Giles’s sister went on social media. She said for every ten negative comments, there’d be one positive. And she’d send us the positive ones. We didn’t look ourselves."

Giles was actually due to appear on the show with one of his children, but when she changed her mind he managed to convince Mary to come on board instead. And so the world was introduced to "nutty" and "nutty".

The nickname is exactly what it sounds like. Speaking to the Daily Star, Mary explained: "We call each other "nutty' because we both consider the other to be a bit mad.

"Certainly Giles has multiple personality disorder so he's all sorts of people and one of them is a bit of a genius. The truth is we're both neurotic.''
