Gogglebox could face Ofcom probe after Michael family moan about coronavirus rules

"Derogatory" comments from a Gogglebox family could see the show probed by Ofcom.

The broadcasting watchdog could be launching an investigation into the Channel 4 show after complaints about the episode aired on Friday, September 11.

As the show returned for a new series, the conversation turned to the coronavirus pandemic, and it seems viewers were less than impressed with some of the comments made by the Michael family.

It came after the families sat down to watch a segment of the BBC News.

The Michael family began discussing the fact that many young people are now moving to other parts of the country to go to university.

Son Louis said: "As long as they’re not going clubbing and picking up 18/19 year olds and taking them back to halls, things will be fine.

"It seems crazy that they were putting out all of these schemes like Eat Out To Help Out and trying basically to get everyone back to normal, and now they’re blaming young people."

His sister Alex agreed: "It just seems backwards to me because if there’s a small group of people who are at risk of dying, then it should be them self-isolating - not the large group of young people.

"And also it should be their choice because if they’re aware of the risks and the statistics then it should be their choice whether they isolate or not. But to make everyone else put their lives on hold, it’s ridiculous."

The comments made by the siblings, who appear on the show with their parents Andrew and Carolyne, have received some backlash.

Ofcom tells Mirror Online that so far nine complaints have been registered with them specifically regarding the comments made about elderly and vulnerable people affected by coronavirus.

In total, 16 complaints were made about the episode.

Some viewers also took to Twitter to hit back at the comments.

One wrote: "Seriously not impressed with the views of the Michael family on #Gogglebox - typically so selfish of that generation. #COVID19 possibly even #COVIDIOTS"

Another posted: "The Michael family. So bloody selfish and ignorant. I'll just give up working and hide in a box. Happy now? #GOGGLEBOX."

A third tweeted: "They should ban them from talking about corona on gogglebox cus the michaels family saying why should people put their lives on hold to protect a few vulnerable people and that Essex kid who said ‘keep old people in’ are angering me to no end’"

While a fourth wrote: "I bloody love #GOGGLEBOX but that ableism from the Michael family is absolutely disgusting. What do they think vulnerable people with jobs are supposed to do? If they stay home they won't get paid. So die of Covid or die of starvation?"

Mirror Online has contacted Channel 4 for comment.
