After Adam Kinzinger thrashed Trump’s claims about the FBI’s involvement in the Jan. 6 riots, the Trump-appointed FBI Director Kash Patel has tripped over the same line. Looks like someone forgot to open the MAGA group chats.
In the wake of new details unveiled about the Jan. 6 attack, Trump tried to spin the shameful self-coup around by blaming the FBI for agitating the riot. The new document revealed that 274 plainclothed agents were deployed to the Capitol on Jan. 6 to control the agitation. However, Trump dismissively called the report “A Radical Left Democrat Scam” on his Truth Social account.
But usually Trump’s loyal megaphone, Patel let the mask slip this time. While the MAGA gang was dead set on blaming the FBI for being the real culprits, Patel insisted that the agents were sent on a “crowd control mission.” That single phrase shattered the MAGA script, undermining Trump’s fantasy of FBI-orchestrated insurrection. In a scramble to repair the damage, Patel called the deployment a breach of Bureau protocol, but the truth was already out.
Patel essentially conceded that the agents were law enforcement, not “agitators.” Speaking to Fox, he admitted Metro Police had already declared a riot before the agents moved in. But his slip left Trump’s talking points dangling in midair.
“This was the failure of a corrupt leadership that lied to Congress and to the American people about what really happened. Thanks to agents coming forward, we are now uncovering the truth. We are fully committed to transparency, and justice and accountability continues with this FBI.”
Trying to recover, Patel pivoted to bashing former Director Christopher Wray for misleading Congress. Yet the irony is impossible to miss: in trying to defend Trump, Patel exposed the hollowness of Trump’s own defense. In the end, Patel didn’t just contradict the MAGA boss, but undercut the entire conspiracy industry Trump relies on to keep his base enraged.
