The demotion of ozeki Goeido (4-8), who has been on kadoban status, meaning he needed to win eight of his 15 matches in the current sumo tournament, became inevitable on Thursday after he was forced out by sekiwake Asanoyama (7-5) on the 12th day of the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament held at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan.
No. 4 maegashira Shodai and No. 17 maegashira Tokushoryu, both competing for the title, had wins and remain at a single loss each. Shodai thrust down komusubi Abi (5-7), and Tokushoryu also thrust down No. 11 maegashira Kagayaki (9-3).
Ozeki Takakeisho, who followed the two rank-and-file wrestlers, also secured a win over No. 6 maegashira Tochinoshin (5-7), leaving him with two losses.
