Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Dominates Box Office Again
The blockbuster film 'Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire' continued its reign at the domestic box office, maintaining its dominance over new releases 'Monkey Man' and 'The First Omen.' In its second weekend, the Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment's monster tentpole raked in $31.7 million from 3,948 theaters, bringing its total domestic earnings to $132 million.
Despite a 60% drop in ticket sales from its impressive $80 million debut, the film's performance remains strong for a movie of its scale. In contrast, 'Monkey Man,' directed by Dev Patel, secured the second spot with $10.1 million, while 'The First Omen' trailed behind at $8.4 million.
Both 'Monkey Man' and 'The First Omen' were originally intended for streaming platforms but made their way to theaters. 'Monkey Man,' with positive audience and critical reception, has the potential for sustained success in the coming weeks.
On the international front, 'The First Omen' had a lackluster start with $9.1 million, resulting in a global opening of $17.5 million. The film, part of a long-running horror franchise, received mixed reviews and a modest box office performance.
Despite the new releases, overall box office revenues are trailing behind last year by 10%, as reported by Comscore. Established films like 'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,' 'Kung Fu Panda 4,' and 'Dune: Part Two' continue to contribute to the box office landscape.
'Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire' has garnered $88.8 million domestically and $138 million worldwide, while 'Kung Fu Panda 4' has achieved $166 million in North America and $410 million globally. 'Dune: Part Two' remains a standout performer, amassing $264 million in North America and $634 million worldwide, solidifying its position as the top-grossing film of the year.
