Just when you thought it was out ...
"The Godfather: Part III" will be rereleased in select theaters in December, Paramount announced in a news release Thursday. The new version still doesn't have Robert Duvall, but it does have a new name and everything director Francis Ford Coppola wanted.
Retitled "The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone," this director's cut has a new beginning, ending and various other edits courtesy of Coppola alongside screenwriter and original "Godfather" author Mario Puzo. It will later be released on digital and DVD.
The new version "is an acknowledgment of Mario's and my preferred title and our original intentions for what became 'The Godfather: Part III,' " Coppola said in the release. "With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to 'The Godfather' and 'The Godfather: Part II.' "
"The Godfather" came out in 1972, with "Part II" in 1974. "Part III" was released in 1990.
Coppola and his production company, American Zoetrope, poured over original film and footage to restore and re-create "The Godfather: Part III."
The first two "Godfather" films are widely considered all-time greats. The third one, not so much.
