Sony Santa Monica Studio has confirmed exactly when players will finally step into "God of War Laufey's" story, revealing the news during a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
The announcement gave fans their clearest look yet at the timeline for this next chapter in the "God of War" franchise, along with a major surprise about what comes after it.
'God of War: Laufey' Release Date Unveiled at SDCC
Sony Sta. Monica Studio's head of creative, Cory Barlog, confirmed the date live on stage during the panel, with the studio posting it as a simple graphic reading 2.16.27. PlayStation's official X account echoed the confirmation shortly after, making it official across multiple channels.
"God of War Laufey" is set to release on February 16, 2027, landing in a particularly packed month that already includes "Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis," "Persona 4 Revival," "Metro 2039," and "Fable" the following week.
Barlog also confirmed that "God of War Laufey" will ship with a physical disc, a detail that carries extra weight given Sony's recent announcement that it plans to stop producing physical discs entirely starting in 2028.
The panel's biggest surprise came afterward, when Barlog revealed that another Kratos led "God of War" game is already in development as a direct follow-up connecting to Laufey's story. This gives fans who were worried about Kratos's reduced role something to look forward to down the line.
Fans may wishlist the game for now, with preorder details still yet to be detailed.

'God of War Laufey' Is Exclusive to the PS5
"God of War Laufey" is confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, marking Sony's next major first-party release following "Marvel's Wolverine" this September. The game is set to be Barlog and Sony Sta. Monica Studio's next big swing after wrapping up the Norse saga with Kratos and Atreus.
This time, the team has put the spotlight on a character players have only known through flashbacks and memory until now.
Deborah Ann Woll stars as Faye, also known as Laufey, with Christopher Judge returning to voice Kratos. Woll has reportedly known about her role in Laufey's story for close to a decade, reflecting how long Santa Monica has quietly been building toward this spinoff behind the scenes.
What to Expect From 'God of War Laufey'
"God of War Laufey" takes place parallel to the events of "God of War" (2018) and "God of War Ragnarök," following Faye through the Everywhen after her death, as her carefully laid protective plans for Kratos and Atreus begin to unravel. She's set to face down new antagonists, including Sekhmet, in what Santa Monica Studio has described as a story rooted just as much in emotion as in combat.
According to the PlayStation Blog, Faye has long stood as one of the most impactful figures in "God of War's" Norse saga, a legendary warrior and leader whose influence stretched across the Nine Realms long before she ever crossed paths with Kratos.
"God of War Laufey" aims to bring that legacy to the forefront, giving players a chance to explore her humanity, her strengths, and her flaws as the game's first-ever protagonist who isn't Kratos himself.
