God of War for PS4: Everything you need to know about the eighth instalment of the action-adventure game series

It’s been one of Sony’s flagship brands since it launched in 2005, and now the firm has released its eighth instalment of God of War for PlayStation 4.

The iconic series centres around Kratos - a Spartan warrior tricked into killing his wife and daughter by his former master, the Greek God of War Ares.

What follows is Kratos’ attempts to free himself from the influence of the gods and the Titans and exact revenge.

The story in the eighth instalment is a new direction for the series, and is loosely based on Norse mythology.

Here’s everything you need to know about today's launch.

How much does it cost?

The game costs £47.99 and can be purchased from an array of retailers including Tesco, Smyths, GAME and 365games.

What is it about?

The story in the eighth instalment is a new direction for the series, and will be loosely based on Norse mythology (PlayStation)

With his vengeance against the Gods of Olympus behind him, Kratos now lives in the realm of Norse mythology.

Kratos is joined by his son, Atreus, who he must teach to fight, as well as prevent him from repeating the Ghost of Sparta’s mistakes.

This instalment of God of War combines many of the hallmarks of the iconic series – brutal combat and epic fights – and merges them with a powerful narrative that re-establishes Kratos’ world.

How has the game changed?

Kratos returns as the main character. He now has a son, called Atreus. Kratos is a mentor and protector to his son, while he tries to master the rage that has driven him on for years.

The game is a "reimagining" of the franchise, with gameplay being rebuilt - the one major change is Kratos no longer uses his double-chained blades.

Instead the protagonist uses a magical battle axe.

The camera has also changed. It uses an over the shoulder free camera instead of the fixed one.

A short text-based game was released on Facebook Messenger on February 1. It follows Atreus on his first adventure into the Norse wilds.

Are there special editions?

There are three - Stone Mason, Collector's and Digital Deluxe.

The Stone Mason is only available in the US and Canada.

Who wrote the musical score?

Bear McCreary, best known for his work on television shows such as Battlestar Galactica and The Walking Dead, wrote the score for God of War, composing all-new themes for the game.
