'God-like status' - Arsenal great Kevin Campbell backs Joe Willock to make Newcastle move permanent

The chance for Joe Willock to play at Arsenal 'isn't there anymore' and it wouldn't be a 'mistake' to allow him to leave the Gunners this summer.

That is the view of former Arsenal forward Kevin Campbell who has backed Willock to make his loan stay at Newcastle permanent after already attaining 'legendary status' on Tyneside.

Willock joined Newcastle on a loan deal until the end of the season in January and has scored four goals in 10 appearances during his brief stay in the North East.

The 21-year-old midfielder capped his debut for the Magpies with a goal in a 3-2 win over Southampton and has scored important goals from the bench in draws with Tottenham and Liverpool, as well as the winning goal against West Ham last month.

As a result, Newcastle are keen to bring him back to the club next season, either on loan or on a permanent basis, but a lot will depend on what Arsenal's intentions are.

However, Campbell, who won four major trophies during his time with the Gunners, feels his days in North London are numbered and has backed Willock to build on his 'God-like status at Newcastle.

“I don’t think it would be a mistake to let him go," Campbell told Football Insider.

“He has got legendary status already in Newcastle because he has already scored some really big goals for them.

“It is important for a player like him to play games, score goals and make a difference. That is what he has done up there.

“Fair play to the young man for making the move and then taking his opportunity. Can I see him playing for Arsenal? I do not think the chance is there anymore.

“He has got a God-like status at that football club which is great. Why would he not want to stay there next season?”
