‘God, I hate that guy’: Ryan Kalil thrilled to be on Gregg Williams’ team

Coming out of retirement wasn’t an easy decision for Ryan Kalil, but the fact that he no longer has to face defenses coached by Gregg Williams, other than in practice, may have helped.

Kalil, who is being eased into practice by the Jets, was formally introduced to the media on Saturday. It was then that he shared his disdain for the team’s defensive coordinator.

“God, I hate that guy,” Kalil told reporters on Saturday. “I hate Gregg Williams… He’s one of those coaches though… guys on his team love him. But God, I hate playing against Gregg Williams.”

As a player, Kalil hated playing against Williams-coached defenses. Being in the NFC South, Kalil faced Williams on numerous occasions when Williams served as the defensive coordinator of the Saints. Williams was with New Orleans from 2009-11 during the Bounty Gate era. Kalil’s Panthers won 16 games during that span.

Kalil said he’s happy to be on the same side as Williams now. The Jets DC definitely fits the mold of a coach you love to play for and hate to play against. Kalil no longer has to worry about facing Williams in games that matter, but his tough defense should be coveted as the Jets have often lacked the required preparedness in previous regimes.

Luckily for Kalil, he now only has to worry about Williams during Gang Green’s practices.
