GoCompare star and BBC Radio Wales' Wynne Evans flies to Belgium for new year party only to discover 11pm curfew

Welsh opera star Wynne Evans has told of his anguish after he travelled to Belgium for new year’s eve celebrations only to be met with an 11pm curfew.

Wynne, who is recognised worldwide for his extravagant appearances in the GoCompare adverts, said after receiving the news he decided to get a takeaway and watch Jools Holland’s Hootenanny alone in his hotel room, before heading straight back to the UK.

When a listener phoned in to Wynne’s BBC Radio Wales show to discuss her new year celebrations with him, Wynne admitted to the less than ideal trip.

Asked what he got up to Wynne explained: “I went to Brussels. But this is how well I researched it; when I got there I asked the guy if he had any ideas what I could do there for new year’s eve, to which he said ‘you do know about the 11pm curfew don’t you?’. I went along with it and said yes I know about the curfew - anyway, I didn’t know about it.”

Due to Covid concerns all restaurants and bars must shut in Belgium at 11pm, and this restriction was still in place at the time Wynne travelled.

But Wynne, who said he tucked into a takeaway meal instead, saw the funny side.

“I just came home then,” he added. “I had sushi delivered to the hotel and sat there and watched Jools Holland an hour behind.

“I swear if I see another Jools Holland Hootenanny I don’t think I’ll make it to another new year.”
