'Goat rangers' get to work in west Tokyo grassland

A tribe of goats has made the trip from a farm in Kanagawa Prefecture to a grassland near Odakyu Tama Center Station in Tama, Tokyo, for an annual grazing to remove weeds. The New Town Center Development Co., which operates commercial facilities in the vicinity, has employed these "goat rangers" every year since 2014 as a more environmentally friendly alternative to mowing.

The goats are usually brought in around mid-April, but this year's grazing was pushed back to June 23 in order to avoid a large number of spectators until the coronavirus state of emergency ended.

"I thought they wouldn't come this year, but I'm glad they're back," said a 48-year-old female employee who lives nearby. The goat rangers will stay on the job until November.
