Goat milk skincare products can damage the skin

Milk procured from goat was touted to be the next big thing in the beauty industry with thousands of products being based on the same, as it was called the perfect skin potion by many beauty experts. But, a recent research is proving to be a setback for all manufacturers of goat milk based skincare products.

According to a study, skincare products containing goat’s milk can be dangerous for patients with inflammatory skin conditions.

The research which was published in the journal ‘Clinical and Experimental Allergy’, revealed data of seven patients with inflammatory skin conditions who experienced anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction, after ingesting goat’s or sheep’s milk or cheese products.

As per the study, all the patients had a history of using goat’s milk skin products to treat their inflammatory skin conditions prior to the onset of their allergic reaction.

“Marketing of skin products derived from goat’s milk is extensive and targeted to patients with ‘sensitive skin’ who commonly have underlying inflammatory skin conditions,” the authors of the study wrote.

“Our findings provide novel evidence of the origins of adult-onset milk allergy and add to the growing body of evidence that use of foodstuffs as therapy for inflammatory skin conditions can lead to the development of new food allergies,” they concluded.

Goat milk made it to the ingredient list of a lot of leading skincare products as it contains a high concentration of lactic acid, a gentle alpha-hydroxy acid that helps to removes dead skin cells and reveal smoother, brighter skin underneath. It is also a humectant, which draws moisture from the environment.
